The International Conference on Music Education Technology 2023 (ICMdT2023) is organised by the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts of The Education University of Hong Kong, that will be held from 10th to 12th January 2023. The conference aims to bring together leading academics, researchers, practitioners, and professionals to exchange and share their experiences and research projects on all aspects of music education with the use of technology. It also provides a premier interdisciplinary platform for researchers, educators, and practitioners, to present and discuss the most recent trends and innovations in the fields of music education and technology.

The theme for ICMdT2023 is Unfold the Future of Music Education through Technology. The ICMdT Organising Committee welcomes papers from a wide variety of theoretical, interdisciplinary and practice-based perspectives with the use of technology into the potential topics listed below:

Call for Contributors

The Department of Cultural and Creative Arts of The Education University of Hong Kong announces the International Conference on Music Education Technology 2023 (ICMdT2023).

Submission Formats

ICMdT2023 accepts four submission formats:

  1. Paper Presentations

  2. Poster Presentations

  3. Workshops

  4. Performance/Practice-based Presentations

 
 

Paper Presentations

Please submit an abstract in English of no more than 400 words with the paper title that should clearly state the (1) theoretical/pedagogical background, (2) purpose/objective of the work/research, (3) the key problems/questions addressed, (4) the method, (5) the findings/outcomes, and (6) the conclusions and implications.  References, tables, and figures should be added to the end of the document and are not included in the word count. No more than a total of two (2) tables and/or figures may be included. Submitted abstracts will be evaluated by the Review Panel.

Every accepted abstract will receive an invitation to submit a full paper for the consideration to be published as the conference proceeding by the Asia-Pacific Journal for Arts Education (APJAE).

Poster Presentations

Abstracts for Poster Presentations submissions follow the same rules given for Paper Presentations, above. If your abstract is selected, please design your poster that it is easy to read and include some visuals or charts. Allocate the top of the poster for the title and authors’ names and affiliations. Remember the audience may have a short time frame to read your poster. All posters should be based on the submitted abstract as accepted by the Conference Committee. If a poster is accepted, please bring your poster with you. Posters will be hung on a poster board and therefore it is fine to bring a poster with no backing, such as a rolled-up poster.

 

Poster size should be A1 international paper size. Materials, including the title, should not extend beyond the poster size. Do not use foam core or any thick or multi-layered materials or pushpins directly on the poster boards. Please make sure that the material used for the poster allows it to be posted on the boards. Because of the physical configuration of this type of session, no additional audio-visual equipment is provided.

Workshops

The Workshops should allow certain extent of hands-on activity, interaction and discussion with brief presentation. The abstract of the Workshops should be no more than 400 words with a title that should clearly state (1) the background, (2) purpose/objective, (3) key content, (4) the method, and (5) applications. 

Performance/Practice-based Presentations

The Performance/Practice-based Presentations are expected to showcase practice-based activities (e.g. laptop orchestra, tablet ensemble, DIY instrument) in music education such as innovative music-making with technology. The abstract of the Performance Presentations should be no more than 400 words with a title that should clearly state (1) the background, (2) the artistic goal/purpose, (3) the education value, (4) the method, and (5) applications. 

Postgraduate forum: Proposal Presentations

Submission Guidelines

Please submit your abstracts via EasyChair as a single MS Word file that is editable for format check. All submissions should report original and previously unpublished research results no matter the type of research paper you are presenting.

Professor of Technology, Education, and Music,
UCL Institute of Education, University College London

Evangelos Himonides is Professor of Technology, Education, and Music at UCL, where he leads a number of courses and supervises doctoral and post-doctoral research. He co-directs the International Music Education Research Centre (iMerc) and iMerc Press.  He is co-founder of the Music-Education-Technology International Conference (MET), edits the Sempre conference series, is associate editor of Frontiers in Psychology and the Journal of Music, Technology and Education), and past associate editor of Logopedics Phoniatrics Vocology. Evangelos has developed the free online technologies for Sounds of Intent, Inspire-Music and the Online Afghan Rubab Tutor. He is fellow of the RSA and Chartered Fellow (FBCS CITP) of the British Computer Society. When time is available, Evangelos likes to handcraft musical instruments in order to raise funds for his charitable work.

Professor of Music Education,
The University of Windsor

Dr. Janice Waldron is a Professor of Music Education at the University of Windsor; her research interests include informal music learning practices, online music communities, social media and music learning, vernacular musics, adult music learning, Irish and Scottish traditional musics, and wind band conducting. Janice is published in numerous international peer-reviewed music education journals and also has chapters in a variety of Oxford Handbooks and Routledge Companions. In addition to being the Editor of TOPICs in Music Education, she is an Editorial Board member of the International Journal of Music Education, Action, Criticism, and Theory in Music Education, The Journal of Music, Education, and Technology, The International Journal of Popular Music Education, and Canadian Winds. Her latest publication is “The Oxford Handbook of Social Media and Music Learning,” of which she is principal editor (with Dr. Stephanie Horsley and Dr. Kari Veblen, co-editors). Her research has been funded by the Social Science and Humanites Council of Canada since 2011. In addition to being a classically trained wind ensemble conductor, Janice is an accomplished Irish traditional musician on tin whistle, flute, and Uilleann pipes.

Associate Professor of Music Education and Music Technology
NYU Steinhardt (dual appointment)

S. Alex Ruthmann is Area Head and Associate Professor of Interactive Media and Business at NYU Shanghai, and Associate Professor of Music Education and Music Technology at NYU Steinhardt (dual appointment). He is the Founder/Director of the NYU Music Experience Design Lab (MusEDLab), and core faculty in the Music and Audio Research Lab (MARL) at NYU Steinhardt. He also serves as an affiliate faculty member in the NYU Shanghai Program on Creativity and Innovation and the Educational Communication Technology/Digital Media Design for Learning Program in NYU Steinhardt.

The MusEDLab research team researches and designs new technologies and experiences for music-making, learning, and engagement together with industry and community partners including the New York Philharmonic, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Traditional Chinese Orchestra, Carnegie Hall, Peter Gabriel, Herbie Hancock, Yungu School, Portfolio School, Tinkamo, UNESCO, Peer 2 Peer University, League of American Orchestras, and the Rock and Roll Forever Foundation.
